Pia Skaarer Nielsen - Wonderous Woolerie

Pia Skaarer Nielsen is a self-taught spinner, weaver and felter. She moved to Nova Scotia in 1989 with her family from Copenhagen, Denmark.

Pia is involved in exploring and growing fibre and in sharing her knowledge with anyone interested. Since acquiring a spinning wheel and a loom in 1996 each day has been an entanglement of twisted and warped pleasure filled discoveries.

She has participated in diverse weaving workshops in Scandinavia and NS and has been actively involved with spinning workshops and retreats in the Maritimes for the last 8 years.

Alongside the weaving in her studio new fruits of delight have entered Pia’s fibre world. Through a hand felting process, where she mixes wool, water and soap and use sharp felting needles, deliciously decorative woollen fruits regularly ripen in her hands. Felted apples, pears, garlic bulbs, lemons, avocados or pumpkins are perfect gifts for special occasions or for brightening up any spot in your house. Most of the wool for this endeavour grows on the backs of Pia’s sheep (though she does have to dye it they only come in earthy colours). The rest comes from neighbourhood sheep which gladly shed their fluff for this juicy purpose.

Pia lives with her family in an old farmhouse and has recently renovated her weaving studio for teaching anyone interested in the knowledge of working with a loom and piles of wondrous yarn.
