Denise Aspinall - Aspinall Pottery

Denise Aspinall was born in Cape Breton, went to school in Labrador, Newfoundland, and came to the Annapolis Valley in 1972 to attend Acadia University.  Her pottery began as a hobby which eventually led to an apprenticeship in 1980 at Meat Cove Pottery in Cape Breton, at the northernmost tip of the island.  At the end of that year, she returned to the Annapolis Valley to build her own studio, which she located in Port Williams.  In 2004 the studio was relocated to the beautiful, historic village of Canning, near the Look Off and Blomidon Provincial Park.  It is a working studio with a small retail outlet that is open to the public by chance or by appointment.  Denise has been active in the Nova Scotia Potters Guild since 1991 and in the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council since 1986 where she is a juried status member.

Aspinall Pottery was presented from the Town of Wolfville to our visiting former Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chrétien, in 1996.  Pieces were also presented to CBC celebrity host, Bill Richardson from our local theatre company Two Planks and a Passion in 1996 and 1998, and in 2006 to the Hon. Myra Freeman, former Lieutenant-Governor for Nova Scotia from the local Women in Business.

Aspinall Pottery is handmade from porcelain clay on the potter’s wheel, decorated with a liquid clay called slip, and fired in an electric kiln.  Food safe glaze is used and the ware is suitable for use in the microwave and conventional oven but not recommended in the dishwasher.

The Blueberry Pattern is available exclusively at Between the Bushes Restaurant.
